FIVE & DIME JAZZ
Five & Dime Jazz is the duo of Eberle Umbach & John Hayes— that's us, with some Five & Dime Jazz tools,  in the pic opposite.   We're located in Indian Valley, Idaho.  Although this does appear on most maps, few people know where it is.  We're about two & a half hours northwest of Boise (three hours at the speeds we drive).

Our Five & Dime Jazz repertoire focuses on  "standards" from roughly the first half of the 20th century— everything from early Tin Pan Alley to “Great American Songbook” composers like Carmichael & Gershwin.  We also add in original material, & this ranges widely in style, from ragtime to bossa nova with lots of stops in between.  Here are mp3 links to a couple of our original tunes— the first is called
Rubato Kangaroo— we co-wrote this one; the second, which Eberle wrote, is called Zebra Weather (both songs are © Plum Alley Music, 2001-2008)

As you can see from the picture, Eberle's main instruments in Five & Dime Jazz are the flute & melodica.  We're guaranteed at every gig to have at least one person ask what the melodica is—  it's a sort of wind instrument version of the accordion.  John plays guitar, tenor guitar & tenor & baritone ukuleles.

We've also tried our hand at composing soundtracks to silent films, writing scores (with support from the Idaho Commission on the Arts & the Idaho Film Collection) for two Nell Shipman movies: Back to God's Country & The Grub Stake.  Because you can never have too many band names, we perform our silent film scores as The Bijou Orchestrette.  Just follow the link to find out more about our "silent film incarnation."
