Rhenish Scenes, 2
MAY
May pretty May gone boating on the Rhine
Ladies watched from the peaks
You’re so pretty but the boat’s receding
Which makes the river willows weep

And blossoming orchards blur in the distance
Petals dropping from May’s cherry trees
Are the fingernails of the one I love
The faded petals are like her eyelids

On the road that runs by the riverbank
A bear a monkey a dog led by gypsies
Slowly follow a cart drawn by a donkey
While through the Rhineland vineyards dies
A regimental air played on a fife

May pretty May has decked the ruins
With ivy with virgin vines with roses
The Rhine wind shakes the willows on the bank
And the babbling reeds and the vines’ bare blossoms
