The Lorelei
for Jean Sève
At Bacharach there was a blonde enchantress
She let all the lovelorn men languish

The bishop summoned her before his tribunal
He absolved her in advance on account of her beauty

Beautiful Lorelei your eyes are filled with jewels
What magician gave you the power to cast spells

I’m weary of life and my eyes are cursed
Those who behold me bishop must perish

My eyes are filled with fire not jewels
Cast to the flames these spells

I’m burning in those flames lovely Lorelei
Let another condemn you you’ve bewitched me

You’re laughing Bishop Pray for me rather to Blessed Mary
Put me to death and may God defend you

My lover has gone to a distant country
Put me to death I love nothing now

My heart grieves me since he’s not here
My heart grieves me since the day he departed

The Bishop called for three armed knights
Take this mad woman off to the convent

Go in your madness Lorelei go with your trembling eyes
You’ll become nun in a habit of black and white

Then they went on their way all four
The Lorelei pleaded with them her eyes shone like stars

Knights let me climb that lofty rock
So I can look on my castle on last time

So I can behold myself once more in the river
For I’m going to a convent amongst virgins and widows

The wind twined her loosened hair as she stood on high
The Knights called Lorelei Lorelei

Below on the Rhine a skiff draws near
My lover steers it he sees me he’s calling

My heart grows tender my lover draws near
She leaned forward then and plummeted into the Rhine

For she’d seen the lovely Lorelei in the stream
Her eyes like the Rhine her hair like the sun
