The Sweetness of Hearth And Home
Benjamin Péret
The lady coughed coughed
the gentleman blanched
their son his fingers up his nose
waited for the appearance of a gas lamp on his chest
The lady coughed
ever since she saw
a blonde woman
cleave a rock
with a celestial razor
If the gentleman blanched
it was because heaven had ordained him that rock
while strewing the earth with hummingbird feathers
a hummingbird thus plucked sang
I’ve got a tail
in god’s name
I’ve got a tail
Then a big gust
from whales from perfumed umbrellas
passed over the salty earth
like a ticket-lady’s benediction
and three white doves
inscribed with a red cross
flew off from Mount Blanc
