Rhenish Scenes, 4
The Bells
My handsome gypsy my lover
Hear the bells pealing
We were making love rashly
Sure no one would see us

But we weren’t so well hidden
All the bells roundabout
Spotted us from their towers
And told everybody about it

Tomorrow Henry and Cyprian
Mary Urusula and Catherine
The baker and the baker’s wife
And then my cousin Gertrude

Will smile as I pass by
I won’t know where to hide
You’ll be far away I’ll weep
           And maybe even die
